The colourful rodent received a paint job in Cullompton, Devon – although how he managed it remains a mystery.

The crafty grey squirrel may have camouflaged itself in order to avoid being culled, as its species is said to carry squirrel pox that could potentially kill its red counterpart.

The animals are therefore euthanised to try to increase the numbers of red squirrels in some parts of the country, but it seems this little critter had found a sneaky way to escape.

Dick Bedford, 61, a retired police officer said he had been fooled by the disguise for a moment but then noticed there were tufts of fur above the ears, which are characteristic of greys.

He said: 'It appears to be a grey squirrel that has been doing what they are good at, getting up to mischief.

'He's obviously found some red paint or similar but I dread to think where the rest is.'
