Rare white bison born after tribal dance & prayer - via D R Shoop

GOSHEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A bison from Connecticut is turning a lot of heads these days. That's because it's a white bison, which happens to be extremely rare.

News 8 was intrigued about it so we went to Goshen to get a first hand look.
In a group of bison grazing at Peter Fay's farm, one stands out, an incredibly rare white bison.
How rare? Well, according to some experts only about one in 10 million bison are albinos.
This calf came into the world on June 16th.
"This little guy came into the world about a week ago," said farmer Peter Fay, "today he weighs a healthy 30 pounds."
"Really, I didn't know totally, but I just knew it was something special," said Fay.
At the time, Fay was watching another cow in the pasture giving birth. Then he saw something incredible.
"And when it hit the ground I could see it was white," Fay said. "I didn't really look at it twice because it was new, and after 20 minutes when it got dried off and was nursing with the mom I knew it was something different."
The white bison is not only rare, it is also considered significant and in many cases sacred by Native American tribes.
After giving birth, Fay reached out to some of his Native American friends who told him an amazing story.
"They had a dance out in South Dakota on Wednesday," Fay said, "dancing and praying for a buffalo and a calf, and when that happens they say a calf is born three days after the ceremony. And they told me this prior to asking me when my calf was born, and then I told them it was three days after their ceremony, so they were pretty excited about that."
The calf has been given the temporary name "White Buffalo," but members of a Native American tribe will travel to Fay's farm in the weeks to come for an official naming ceremony.
